The African Youth With Disabilities Network Secretariat is looking for you


Summary. African Youth with Disabilities Network (AYWDN) seeks the services of a coordinator and a part-time office financial and administrative assistant to establish and run its secretariat based at the offices of Action Network for the Disabled (fiscal sponsor) These positions are fully supported through a grant from Disability Rights Fund (DRF) towards the strengthening of the AYWDN secretariat. Background. African Youth with Disabilities Network (AYWDN) is a continental network bringing together youth with disabilities to work towards inclusion of youth with disabilities issues in their respective countries and across borders. The network was founded in May 2011 following a convening of African Youth with Disabilities in Kenya from 12 African countries to champion the agenda of youth with disabilities on the continent, which has been missing in development circles, the mainstream disability and youth movement. This is an executive position within the network and its holder will be responsible for making decisions in consultation with the Steering Committee and ensuring that the AYWDN runs and relates effectively to its stakeholders including members. The holder will report directly to the Steering Committee and perform his/her duties in consultation with the Steering Committee. We are looking for a person with experience to establish a secretariat that serves its members represented in over 10 countries with a possibility of growth. The key deliverable for this position is a functioning secretariat able to discharge its function as envisioned in the constitution of AYWDN, raise resources to sustain the work of the network, and grow its profile across Africa. The holder of this position will be responsible for; a) Spearheading the development of guidelines for new chapter admission and management. b) Leading the process of developing a strategic plan for the network, in consultation with the Steering Committee, chapters, and other members c) Taking the lead in donor liaison and fundraising activities for the sustainability of the secretariat and the network`s activities. d) Managing the day-to-day running of the network and communication with its members and stakeholders. e) Developing internal policies and systems towards effective and efficient operation of the network. f) Promoting visibility of the network amongst donors, governments, regional bodies, member countries and other stakeholders. g) Organizing board meetings and maintaining regular links between the secretariat and the steering committee as the governing body. h) Generating quarterly reports of the network`s activities or other engagements. Qualifications & Requirements. 1) A degree in social sciences, communication or disability studies 2) At least five years of experience working in an NGO (preferably a network) at management levels. 3) Conversant with management, and monitoring & evaluation of projects 4) Experience with financial planning, money management and control 5) Strong leadership skills, effective interpersonal, communication, negotiation skills and able to relate to people from different cultures and backgrounds 6) Conversant with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Disabled Persons’ Organization (DPO) movement 7) Proficiency in computer applications especially word, excel & access 2. OFFICE ADMINSTRATIVE & FINANCIAL ASSISTANT. The holder of this position will report to the Coordinator and will perform other functions as directed by the coordinator from time to time. The deliverable will be to ensure that the secretariat runs in a cohesive manner and Network members and stakeholder issues are addressed in the quickest time possible with utmost professionalism. The staff will be directly responsible for: i. Recording all the network`s undertakings and safeguarding the records in a secure electronic and/or hard copy filing system. ii. Preparing and monitoring cash flow against income and budget for project implementation iii. Keeping financial records and ensuring financial accountability for the network and project budgets iv. Keeping an inventory of contacts and list of country chapters and their partners v. Supporting country chapters to align their operations with the Network`s guidelines vi. Managing any Network volunteers in accordance with defined policies vii. Supporting the Coordinator in fulfilling her/his mandate viii. Other tasks as defined by the Coordinator Qualifications & Requirements 1) A degree or diploma in business administration from a recognized institution,CPA part 1 section II will be an added advantage. 2) A two year experience in an administrative role in a busy organization 3) Proficiency in computer applications especially word, excel & access 4) Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, as well as as part of a team 5) Experience in managing donor funded projects will be an added advantage.
